This Is What Happens When You Reply to Spam Email | James Veitch | TED

Video Overview & Insights

Suspicious emails: unclaimed insurance bonds, diamond-encrusted safe deposit boxes, close friends marooned in a foreign country. They pop up in our inboxes, and standard procedure is to delete on sight. But what happens when you reply? Follow along as writer and comedian James Veitch narrates a hilarious, months-long exchange with a spammer who offered to cut him in on a hot deal.

SHOCKED this is back up after what we now know about James

Why is there stand up comedy on a TED stage? Clearly none of his story is factual. It’s funny, but a tad out of place.

The worst thing about losing everything, is losing everything, but the best thing about losing everything, is finding the leak. You can't get scams if you fall off the map. 😂

"Of course i'm ready to buy your gold, but there's this little issue i have... no phone, no email, no mailbox, no address... so could you follow these coordinates and i'll just be the guy with the cardboard sign, you can't miss it, and i'll be sure to sign for it. But, there may be an issue if they ask for some ID to back that up. You'll just have to take my word for it, I hope that's not a problem, my parents could vouch for me but they might be out of the country for an unspecified amount of time. They are on the run because they stole the (insert stolen item here) and i need that gold to give them a fresh start, but they'll vouch for me after you send the gold, i promise. It may take me 3-6(0) business days to respond, but i will let you know if i get the gold. My bank account is still under my cousins name though, so if you could take an i.o.u for it i could have the money as soon as next winter, did i mention i live in australia? Nice winters there, really comfortable. Message me at any time. When do i need to rent the forkflift to pick up the gold, or is that included?"

I guess the people at TED are unaware of the allegations of r@pe and s3xual misconduct regarding this p.o.s. Either that or they care more about views.

I had a fellow call me one Saturday afternoon with a credit card offer from the Chevy Chase Bank in Chevy Chase, Maryland. I launched into, "WOW, I love Chevy Chase and those vacation movies! Put Chevy on, I want to talk to him!" He said, "You don't understand, this is the Chevy Chase Bank." To which I replied "YOU MEAN CHEVY HAS HIS OWN BANK? I knew he was big, but I didn't know he had his own BANK!" The caller was a real pro. "You don't understand, we would like to send you a credit card (I don't remember if it was a Visa or what) from the Chevy Chase Bank." "WOW, CHEVY WANTS TO GIVE ME A CREDIT CARD???? Put Chevy on, I want to talk to him."

I must have strung that poor fellow on for five minutes. Finally, I needed an off-ramp. "Look fella, if you don't have Chevy there, I don't want to talk to you." And I hung up on him.

And I didn't feel one bit of pity for him.

To anyone wondering what happened to this video for a while: James Veitch was accused of some stuff from a few women which resulted in TED making these videos private. They have finally made them public again around five months ago. Nothing was ever proven so he could've been guilty or innocent for all we know. Most online believe he didn't do it, but regardless, it has all died down, so that's probably why they did this.

Let me get this straight, social media is engineered to rape our children by psychologically addicting them, but they haven't figured out how to filter out scam emails. Sure.
