Following her victory over Andreeva in the 2026 Madrid Open final, Kostyuk did not shake hands, a stance she has maintained since 2022 against all Russian and Belarusian players.
Key Reasons for Kostyuk's Stance:
Protest Against War: Kostyuk has stated she will not shake hands with players from Russia or Belarus until the war ends and Russia is held accountable.
Lack of Public Condemnation: Kostyuk has expressed disappointment that few Russian players have publicly apologized or condemned the actions of their country.
Personal Pain: She has expressed that seeing Russian players competing while her country is under attack is "unacceptable" and "painful".
Consistency: Kostyuk has maintained this policy consistently, refusing handshakes in numerous matches, including in the 2026 Brisbane International final against Aryna
Exception to the Rule:
Daria Kasatkina: Kostyuk has made an exception for Daria Kasatkina because she has openly spoken out against the war and has taken steps to change her nationality, which Kostyuk views as an act of courage.
While many fans criticized the lack of a handshake, others supported her stance, creating a debate over the role of sportsmanship in the context of geopolitical conflicts.

All the white people in the comments talking about who should respect who and this country has invaded that country.
You people enslaved Black Hebrews for 400 years, made trillions off them, to this day still earning billions a year just off Black people in America.
You have no right to tell anyone how they should think or feel in a situation like this.
You've caused most of the destruction on the Earth kmt
Glory to Ukraine! Glory to heroes! ❤❤👍👍
@pavelfireOn the one hand, I understand the plight of a population suffering a despicable military aggression; I understand less the implication of involving a little girl who plays tennis and is neither involved in politics nor a soldier in the protest.
I believe there is a huge difference between individuals and the nation to which they belong, and the responsibilities of politicians and the military do not necessarily extend to the rest of the population.
Indeed, I believe that if Ukrainian and Russian athletes joined forces, they would send an even stronger signal than not shaking hands: a signal of peace against the politicians and military who are waging war.
Contrary to all the praise being heaped on Kostiuk I say she should be banned for refusing to shake hands with Russian or Belarusian players. There should be no place for political statements in sport. In any case, do you imagine Putin consulted Andreeva or the other Russian players before deciding to invade Ukraine?!!! They just happen to be born in Russia and have no control on what their Government does. Also, Kostiuk's speech was all about 'me, me, me' and 'her team', not a reciprocal word about Andreeva. I recommend all the praisers should try and remember what sport is supposed to be about, if they ever knew! By the way, I'm English, NOT Russian!
@raysb-90On the contrary, if she had used her speech to praise Andreeva as proof that sports and war are unrelated, the public evaluation of her would have been entirely different. As a Japanese person, I remember that the U.S. dropped atomic bombs on us in the past, yet no one here rejects Americans by dredging up that history. Even back then, I believe we viewed the state and the individual as two completely separate entities.
@LH-uw9ceShameful for not shaking hands nor congratulating her opponent. Should be severly penalized for disrispecting the tournament and lack of sportmanship.
What makes it even more disgusting, Mira is literally just a child and can't be blamed for whatever issues this lady has with other countries.
Nasha Kracsha Marta
@tolyasharasto4nik391Congratulations to all Russian tennis players for being the better persons then their Ukranian opponents. If every sportsperson didnt speak bad publicaly about their countrys war dealings, every USA sportsperson ever shouldv been threated this way. Sports and war have no place within one another. Kudos to all Russian players and shame to all Ukranian players for their behaviour.
@MA-rq6ieVitayu Marta
@tolyasharasto4nik391Enjoy the moment, you earned it.........
@LNR2023-o2yPersona irrispettosa che non merita questo sport
@consuelorinalducci4912Grande kostkuk💙💛🇺🇦
@AndreaPusceddu-h5wCringe 😅😅😅
@philemonlevraiMirra acknowledge Marat win but Marta did not do it for Mirra,If Mirra had not played doubles her energy would have been more and she would have won also
@ShravaniNerugantiNobody respect u now
@czech-street-workout4193Ukranian players should be banned doing speeches, always disrespectful
@blueskys2010Marta did not congratulated Mirra in her speech . What a new low sportsmanship?
Marta just can't treat her as a proxy for a war conflict which she didn't started.
A champion’s maturity belongs on the podium, and Marta failed it absolutely.
🤢🤢🤢
@yamintriki1588Why even saying "Madrid is not your favorite tourney", even not congratulating Mirra also. U shld hv prepared ur speech also. Your speech should show full sportsmanship and appreciation....tsk tsk tsk. What more if it's a grandslam that u hv won over a russian? 😢😢
@reynoldmina6885Why russians can participate tournaments in the first place? Human life is not valued anymore? Money and fun more important… sad my
@andriymihaylovsky1488Hope Mirra understand there is nothing personal and they are blessed ATP and WTA allow them to play and catch millions from the west. Everybody knows there are two blocks pushing each other since over 50 years and Ukrania is just an object to tear apart in the middle of the current tension. Hope one day the world conquer ends and every country stays quiet inside their Boundaries. This two players are light victims of the situation, i dont see them bleeding as other do.
@Happycamper4everMarta is no true champion.
@markkahn8890What a joke 😅. You don’t deserve that title
@juancarlodelosreyes2383What an idiot. You didn’t congratulate your opponent. You sick 🤢 weird 😅and patthic woman
@juancarlodelosreyes2383Tu sais pas qu’il faut féliciter ton adversaire 🤮🤮🤮🤮
@Anaelle-e8bMarta has no class nor respect at all.
Bad sportsmanship is the least to say.
This will be your last trophy 😡
@adi-it5uuKostyuk just made a fool of herself in front of everyone. Shame on her. Give a hand to Andreeva for displaying class and being graceful in defeat.
@Sniper33321Congratulations Champion Marta💚🥰💚❤️Divine👑Beauty fantastic bravo best of the best, beautiful woman💯🔝charming powerful, amazing performance camon let's gooo Glory to Ukraine! 🏆🥇💪🔥👏👏👏🎾🇺🇦
@IgorLeonidovichIt’s apparent in these comments only Ukrainians are defending Kostyuk’s classless speech. Everyone else agrees Andreeva knows more about sportsmanship and respect for the opponent than Kostyuk.
@Sniper33321Congratulations 👏👏 beautiful ❤️❤️
@JorgeCastano-z2o3sShe should definitely learn something from Mirra...show some respect to your opponent...this girl is simply not likable for so many reasons
@Jinan429When will the Ukrainian tennis players understand that their Russian opponents have nothing to do with the war? Their stance is utter stupidity...
@objects_cornerGood lesson on never giving up.
@MoorishBrooklynIf Aryna Sabalenka there, Aryna Sabalenka will win it
@LeoNardo-cm6chShe did the same thing Osaka did in Canada last year and didn’t mention her opponent. The difference is that Osaka did that by mistake but this was completely preplanned and intentional. She’s taking this anti-Russian thing way too far and I think she’ll get a lot of backlash for it. No class.
@TokyoTennisJunk1eShe didn't said any words about Mirra show how uneducated dirty garbage he is.If she is so big Ukraine patriot why she's living in Monte Carlo and not in Ukraine to share the life of poor people of Ukraine .
@Coriolis55Again and again very disrespectfull behaviour! 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
@konstantinbecker7698even the people behind her are not happy for her speech... wkwkw so funny....
@agustinuskakombohe9913She is nasty and unprofessional. Classless and pathetic
@paulettebryan8077No class. No sportsmanship, Marta👎
@nboy_1230disgusting speech. so egocentric and 0 charme.
@davidmario88What kind of speech is that?
@ThePinkTennisI feel sorry for Andreeva — in just one tennis match, she had to deal with a lot of political pressure from so-called “patriots” and herd-like online mobs.
@manle5104Doesnt congratulate her opponent. Disgraceful.
@rumcoke9123Did she shake the Russian's hand ..? Did she congratulate the Russian ..?
This tennis thing is a JOKE. America is causing wars all over the place and tennis players are still shaking Gauff, Keys and Pegula's hands
She is so rude! Is Andreeva or any other russian players responsible for war in Ukraine? Also, this is a tennis tournament, slava Ukraini or any political message should not be mentioned here.
